How Trees & Nature Support Your Energy

Trees are extraordinary healers. Learn how spending time with specific trees can restore, ground and energise your system โ€” and how to begin working with them today.

Why trees heal

Trees are among the most energetically powerful living beings on earth. They are deeply rooted โ€” literally โ€” with root systems that can extend as far underground as their canopy extends above. They breathe in what we breathe out, and breathe out what we breathe in. They have been growing on this planet for hundreds of millions of years, and their energy is ancient, stable and extraordinarily nourishing for the human system.

The science of forest bathing

The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku โ€” forest bathing โ€” has been extensively researched and the results are remarkable. Time spent among trees measurably reduces cortisol levels, lowers blood pressure, boosts immune function and improves mood. Trees release volatile organic compounds called phytoncides which have direct physiological effects on the human body. Simply being in the presence of trees is a form of healing โ€” and working consciously with their energy goes deeper still.

Different trees, different gifts

Just as different plants have different medicinal properties, different trees carry different energetic qualities. The oak offers strength, rootedness and endurance โ€” ideal when you feel scattered or overwhelmed. The birch brings clarity and new beginnings โ€” perfect when you are starting something fresh or trying to let something go. The willow supports emotional healing and the release of grief. The pine cleanses and purifies. The elder protects and transforms. Getting to know these qualities is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the tree world.

How to connect with a tree

Find a tree you are drawn to โ€” trust the pull you feel. Place your hands flat on the bark, or your back against the trunk. Close your eyes. Take three slow breaths. Simply be present with the tree, without agenda or expectation. Notice what you feel โ€” warmth, tingling, a sense of calm, a slowing of the mind. You are connecting your energy field with the tree's energy field, and in that meeting something ancient and healing is exchanged.

Starting your own practice

You do not need to live near ancient woodland to benefit from tree energy. A single tree in a garden or park is enough. Begin by spending five minutes with the same tree once a week โ€” returning to it across the seasons, getting to know its rhythms and its particular quality of energy. Over time you will notice that certain trees call to you at certain times, offering exactly what you need. This is not imagination. This is your energy field communicating with the living world around it.
